Warm, cheesy meatball subs loaded with flavorful marinara sauce and gooey melted cheese, perfect for a comforting meal or casual gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or Italian-style)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)
  • Hoagie rolls or French bread
  • Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Butter, melted (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, egg, minced garlic, finely chopped onion, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  3. Using your hands, roll the mixture into golf-ball-sized portions and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through and golden brown.
  5. While the meatballs are baking, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Pour in marinara sauce and bring to a gentle simmer. Add fresh basil leaves if desired.
  6. Transfer the baked meatballs to the skillet with the marinara sauce. Let them simmer for 5-7 minutes to soak up the flavors.
  7. Lightly toast the hoagie rolls. Brush them with melted butter for extra flavor if desired.
  8. Place 3-4 meatballs inside each roll. Spoon extra marinara sauce over the top, then sprinkle generously with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  9. Place the assembled subs back onto the baking sheet and broil them for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  10. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

[‘Don’t overwork the meat mixture to keep the meatballs tender.’, ‘Brush rolls lightly with butter before toasting for extra flavor.’, ‘Grate your own cheese for smoother melting.’, ‘Add a sprinkle of garlic powder or oregano on the cheese before broiling for enhanced flavor.’]
