Tender beef seasoned with a rich, savory sauce paired with crisp broccoli, this Chinese Beef and Broccoli recipe is quick, flavorful, and better than takeout.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb thinly sliced flank steak or sirloin steak
  • 2 cups fresh broccoli florets
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water or beef broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Slice the beef into thin strips, about 1/8-inch thick. Tip: Freeze the meat for 20-30 minutes to make slicing easier.
  2. In a bowl, mix 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, and a pinch of black pepper. Add the beef and toss to coat. Let it marinate for 15 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together 1/3 cup soy sauce, 2 tablespoons oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, 3 minced garlic cloves, and 1 tablespoon grated ginger. Add 1/4 cup water or beef broth and set aside.
  4. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the broccoli and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until it starts to soften but remains bright green. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Add another tablespoon of oil to the skillet. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned and cooked through. Work in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding the pan.
  6. Return the broccoli to the skillet, pour the sauce over everything, and toss to coat. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens and everything is heated through.
  7. Transfer to a plate and serve warm over steamed rice or noodles.
