This creamy caramelized onion dip combines deeply golden, sweet onions with a tangy, fluffy base for an irresistible party appetizer. It’s easy to make, crowd-pleasing, and perfect for any gathering or cozy night in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions (about 1 lb), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives or green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons unsalted butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and 1/2 teaspoon sugar (if using).
  3. Cook the onions slowly, stirring every few minutes. After 10 minutes, they’ll soften; after 20 minutes, they’ll turn golden and jammy. Scrape up any browned bits.
  4. If onions start to stick, add a splash of water. When deeply caramelized and sweet (about 25-30 minutes), remove from heat and let cool.
  5. In a medium mixing bowl, beat 8 ounces softened cream cheese with a hand mixer or whisk until smooth and fluffy.
  6. Add 1 cup sour cream and 1/2 cup mayonnaise. Mix until fully combined and creamy.
  7. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (if using), and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce.
  8. Once onions have cooled slightly, gently fold them into the creamy base using a rubber spatula.
  9. Taste and adjust salt and pepper if needed. Add more sour cream for extra tang if desired.
  10. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (up to overnight) to let flavors meld.
  11. Spoon into a serving bowl and sprinkle with chopped chives or green onions before serving.

Notes

For best flavor, chill the dip for at least 30 minutes before serving. Caramelize onions slowly over medium-low heat for deep sweetness. Swap Greek yogurt for sour cream for a lighter version, or use plant-based alternatives for dairy-free. The dip is naturally gluten-free; serve with gluten-free chips or veggies. Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 4 days and can be frozen for up to a month.
