A simple and comforting Irish coffee recipe featuring freshly brewed strong coffee, Irish whiskey, brown sugar, fresh whipped cream, and a dusting of nutmeg for a warm, indulgent drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 ounces (180 ml) freshly brewed hot coffee, medium-dark roast preferred
  • 1 to 1 ½ ounces (3045 ml) Irish whiskey (e.g., Jameson)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons (510 grams) brown sugar
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) heavy cream, chilled, for whipping
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, for dusting
  • Optional: a drop or two of vanilla extract for the cream

Instructions

  1. Brew 6 ounces (180 ml) of strong, hot coffee per serving using a French press or drip coffee maker (about 5 minutes).
  2. Pour the hot coffee into a heatproof glass mug. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons (5-10 grams) of brown sugar and stir until fully dissolved.
  3. Add 1 to 1 ½ ounces (30-45 ml) of Irish whiskey to the coffee and stir gently to combine.
  4. Pour ¼ cup (60 ml) of chilled heavy cream into a cold mixing bowl. Whisk by hand or with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Optionally, add a drop or two of vanilla extract before whipping.
  5. Hold a spoon upside down over the coffee’s surface and gently pour the whipped cream over the back of the spoon to float it on top, creating a layer about ½ inch (1.25 cm) thick.
  6. Grate a small pinch of fresh nutmeg over the whipped cream to finish.

Notes

Whip cream to soft peaks for best floating effect. Pour cream slowly over the back of a spoon to keep layers distinct. Use freshly grated nutmeg for best aroma. Coffee should be hot but not boiling to avoid curdling cream. For dairy-free version, use whipped coconut cream and maple syrup instead of brown sugar.
