A quick and easy recipe for crispy, golden mozzarella sticks made in the air fryer, paired perfectly with homemade marinara sauce. This snack delivers a satisfying crunch and melty cheese without the greasy mess.

Ingredients

  • Mozzarella cheese sticks (string cheese), preferably full-fat
  • All-purpose flour, seasoned with salt and pepper
  • Large eggs, beaten
  • Italian-style bread crumbs (Progresso recommended) mixed with grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, dried oregano, and dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade with canned crushed tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, fresh basil, and a pinch of sugar)

Instructions

  1. Unwrap mozzarella sticks and cut each in half if smaller bites are desired (optional). Freeze for about 30 minutes to prevent cheese from oozing during cooking.
  2. Set up breading station with three shallow bowls: one with seasoned flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumb mixture (breadcrumbs, Parmesan, garlic powder, oregano, basil).
  3. Roll each frozen cheese stick in flour, shaking off excess. Dip into egg wash, letting excess drip off. Coat thoroughly in breadcrumb mixture. For extra thick crust, repeat egg and breadcrumb coating once more.
  4. Place breaded sticks on a plate or baking sheet and freeze again for 30 minutes to help coating stick and prevent cheese leakage.
  5. Preheat air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for 5 minutes.
  6. Arrange sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overcrowding. Lightly spray with cooking oil for extra crispiness.
  7. Air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crisp with melty cheese inside.
  8. If making homemade marinara, warm sauce in a small saucepan over medium heat while sticks cook.
  9. Serve immediately hot with marinara sauce for dipping.
