These crispy air fryer sweet potato fries are perfectly tender inside with a golden, crunchy exterior, seasoned simply with flaky sea salt for a delicious snack or side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 1 pound or 450 grams)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt, plus more for sprinkling
  • Pinch of freshly cracked black pepper (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika or garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut sweet potatoes into 1/4-inch (6 mm) thick sticks, keeping size consistent for even cooking.
  2. Soak the cut fries in a large bowl of cold water for 20 minutes to remove excess starch (minimum 10 minutes if short on time).
  3. Drain and pat fries completely dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
  4. Toss fries in a mixing bowl with 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon flaky sea salt, a pinch of black pepper, and optional smoked paprika or garlic powder until evenly coated.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 3 minutes.
  6. Arrange fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overcrowding; cook in batches if necessary.
  7. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 15-18 minutes, shaking the basket or flipping fries halfway through (around 8-9 minutes) until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Immediately sprinkle additional flaky sea salt over fries while hot.
  9. Serve warm for best texture.

Notes

Soaking the fries removes excess starch and is key to crispiness. Dry fries thoroughly before air frying. Avoid overcrowding the basket to ensure even cooking. Sprinkle flaky sea salt after cooking to maintain its texture. For oil-free version, use a light spray of water and dust with cornstarch before air frying.
