These Crunchy Caramel Apple Slices are a festive, easy-to-make treat featuring crisp apple wedges dipped in velvety caramel and coated with crunchy pecans, candies, and pretzels. Perfect for Halloween parties, potlucks, or cozy family gatherings, they’re customizable, less messy than whole caramel apples, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large crisp apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup (240 ml) caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup (60 g) chopped pecans, toasted
  • 1/3 cup (50 g) mini chocolate chips or crushed chocolate candies (e.g., M&Ms)
  • 1/4 cup (35 g) crushed pretzels (optional)
  • Sprinkles, colored sugar, or nonpareils (optional)
  • Flaky sea salt (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry apples thoroughly. Slice each apple into thick wedges (about 1/2-inch wide), removing seeds and core pieces.
  2. Toss apple slices in a bowl with lemon juice to prevent browning. Arrange slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. If using store-bought caramel, combine caramel sauce and butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20-second bursts, stirring until smooth (about 1 minute). If homemade, simmer caramel with butter and salt in a saucepan over low heat until silky and pourable.
  4. Place chopped pecans, chocolate chips, crushed pretzels, and other toppings in separate small bowls.
  5. Dip each apple slice halfway into warm caramel. Let excess drip off, then press caramel side into chosen toppings. Place decorated slices back on the baking sheet.
  6. Let slices sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes to set. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt if desired. Insert toothpicks or popsicle sticks for easy serving.
  7. If caramel slides off, chill apple slices in the fridge for 10 minutes before dipping. Press toppings on firmly. Add more lemon juice if apples start browning.

Notes

Chill apple slices before dipping for better caramel adhesion. Toast pecans for extra flavor. Set up a topping station for easy assembly and customization. Use dairy-free caramel and skip nuts for vegan/nut-free adaptations. Store leftovers in an airtight container with wax paper between layers for up to 2 days.
