Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • ¼ cup (60ml) buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring (liquid or gel)
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 8 ounces (225g) cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup (60g) powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch pan or line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy brownie removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, combine melted butter and granulated sugar. Whisk until smooth and glossy, about 1 minute.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract and buttermilk.
  5. Stir in red food coloring until the batter turns vibrant red.
  6. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture using a spatula, mixing just until combined. The batter should be thick but pourable.
  7. Using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, egg yolk, and lemon juice until smooth and creamy.
  8. Pour half of the red velvet batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Dollop spoonfuls of half the cream cheese mixture across.
  9. Repeat with the remaining red velvet batter and cream cheese mixture on top.
  10. Use a toothpick or skewer to drag through the batter and cream cheese in a pattern that forms small heart shapes by drawing a “V” shape and swirling the sides inward slightly.
  11. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until edges are set and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs but not wet.
  12. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing into squares.

Notes

Let cream cheese come to room temperature before mixing to avoid lumps. Do not overmix the batter to keep brownies tender. Use a toothpick gently to create distinct heart swirls. Cool brownies completely before slicing to prevent crumbling. For dairy-free or gluten-free options, substitute ingredients as suggested in the recipe.
