A delightful combination of bakery-style apple fritters and crispy-edged Belgian waffles in donut form, perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or use gluten-free flour for a GF option)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional, adds warmth)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (or substitute almond or oat milk)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup diced apples (use Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best results)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling: In a small bowl, toss the diced apples with sugar and cinnamon. Set aside to let the flavors meld while you prepare the batter.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Make the batter: Gradually fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients using a silicone spatula. Mix until just combined—don’t overmix, as this can make the donuts dense.
  5. Add the apples: Gently fold the prepared apple mixture into the batter, ensuring even distribution.
  6. Cook the waffle donuts: Preheat your waffle maker and lightly grease it with nonstick spray. Scoop about 1/4 cup of batter onto the center of the waffle maker and close the lid. Cook for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy on the edges.
  7. Make the glaze: While the donuts are cooking, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed—it should be thick but pourable.
  8. Glaze the donuts: Once cooked, transfer the waffle donuts to a cooling rack. Drizzle the glaze generously over each donut and let it set for a few minutes before serving.

Notes
