This homemade apple butter recipe is packed with cozy fall flavors and is perfect for spreading on toast, swirling into oatmeal, or gifting to friends during the holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lbs fresh apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (mix of sweet and tart varieties like Fuji, Gala, and Granny Smith)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice your apples into small chunks.
  2. Add the apples and water to a large pot over medium heat. Cover and let them simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they’re soft and start to break down.
  3. Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture cook uncovered for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples become thick and caramelized.
  4. Use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth. If using a regular blender, let the mixture cool slightly before transferring it (work in batches if needed).
  5. Taste your apple butter and adjust sugar or spices as needed. Add vanilla extract if desired.
  6. Return the apple butter to the pot and cook for another 30 minutes over low heat, stirring occasionally, until it reaches your desired consistency.
  7. Let the apple butter cool completely before transferring it to mason jars or airtight containers. Store in the refrigerator or freezer.

Notes

For best flavor, use a mix of sweet and tart apples. Cook the mixture low and slow for a rich, caramelized taste. Adjust spices to suit your preference.
