Create a fun and customizable popcorn bar with a variety of sweet, salty, and savory toppings perfect for any party or casual gathering. This recipe is quick, easy, and endlessly adaptable to suit all tastes and dietary needs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (100g) popcorn kernels (or about 12 cups popped popcorn)
  • 23 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (or coconut oil/olive oil for dairy-free)
  • Salt, to taste (preferably fine sea salt)
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips or chunks
  • 1/3 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 cup rainbow sprinkles or crushed candy canes
  • 1/2 cup roasted salted peanuts or mixed nuts
  • 1/4 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika or chili powder
  • 1/3 cup mini pretzels, crushed slightly
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries or raisins
  • 1/4 cup toasted coconut flakes

Instructions

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil (vegetable or coconut) in a large heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Add 3 kernels and cover.
  2. When the test kernels pop, add the rest of the 1/2 cup (100g) kernels in an even layer. Cover and remove from heat for 30 seconds to help kernels pop evenly.
  3. Return pot to heat and gently shake occasionally until popping slows to 2-3 seconds apart, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat immediately to avoid burning.
  4. Pour the popped popcorn into a large mixing bowl. Drizzle melted butter (2-3 tbsp) over it and sprinkle with salt to taste. Toss gently to coat evenly.
  5. Place all toppings (nuts, chocolate chips, caramel sauce, pretzels, cheese powder, etc.) in individual bowls or ramekins. Warm caramel sauce slightly if needed for easier drizzling.
  6. Spread popcorn on a large tray or keep in the bowl for guests to scoop from. Arrange toppings within easy reach for customization.
  7. Optionally, mist popcorn lightly with water or extra melted butter before adding toppings to help them stick better.
  8. Encourage guests to experiment with combinations like cheddar powder with smoked paprika or chocolate chips with coconut flakes.

Notes

Use coconut oil or olive oil instead of butter for dairy-free. For gluten-free, substitute pretzels with gluten-free crunchy snacks like roasted chickpeas. Serve toppings separately to avoid sogginess. Popcorn is best fresh; store plain popcorn in airtight containers for up to 2 days. Reheat briefly in a low oven to crisp if needed.
